Introduction to Gate Valves
A gate valve is a linear motion valve used to start or stop the flow of fluid. It operates by lifting a gate (usually a wedge-shaped disc) out of the path of the fluid. Gate valves are one of the most common types of valves used in piping systems.
How It Works
- The valve opens by raising a gate out of the fluid path.
- It closes by lowering the gate into the flow path, creating a seal.
- Operated by a handwheel, gear, or actuator that moves the gate vertically.
Key Features
- Full Bore Flow: When fully open, gate valves offer minimal flow resistance.
- Bidirectional: Can control flow in either direction.
- Tight Sealing: Excellent shutoff capabilities when fully closed.
- Low Pressure Drop: Ideal for applications requiring unobstructed flow.
Limitations
- Slow Operation: Requires multiple turns to fully open or close.
- Not for Throttling: Partially open gate can cause vibration and damage.
- Large Installation Space: Needs more space compared to ball or butterfly valves.
Maintenance: More prone to wear and corrosion in dirty or slurry services.
